Its 2012, and after a must see tennis season of 2011, the fans can now witness the start of another glorious season as the first Tennis Grand Slam of the year The Australian Open kick starts on 16th January 2012. News and updates are flying around as the champions get set to face each other at Melbourne Park for winning the first Grand Slam of the season, The Australian Open 2012.
Taking a look at the top seeds for the tournament, if you look at these top five player and their records, you’ll notice that they are a different breed of players altogether. Novak Djokovic who is the top seed in Men’s Singles Draw, tells that there is no reason why he cannot repeat the jaw dropping season of 2011 where he was defeated only four times. World No. 2 and also the second seed in the tournament, Rafael Nadal is playing with injury worries. Nadal who lost all the five finals against Djokovic in 2011 will look to get to a good start this year, but his injury worries is what bothers me. Meanwhile four-time champion and the No. 3 seed Swiss, Roger Federer, who won 15 matches on the trot will look to redefine his supremacy on grand stages as he looks to win is fifth, to be only behind Roy Emerson who has won six Australian Open titles. Andy Murray, the fourth seed Brit has shown so much promise over the years will look to win his first ever Grand Slam, he is being coached by Czech great Ivan Lendl, who was a two-time champion in Australian Open himself. Murray for me never lacked the game to win a tennis grand slam but at times I feel his attitude turns negative, specially when he is playing big points against big names, but the good news is that he is preparing hard and will like to win this time around. The No. 5 seed of the tournament is none other than the Pitbull himself, David Ferrer turned on his magic in the conclusion of the season last year and he is looks in good touch after winning a hat-trick of Auckland Open titles, Ferrer ousted Rafael Nadal in the previous edition of Australian Open and reached the semi finals.
But these aren’t the only top contenders for winning the Grand Slam. With the likes of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Bernard Tomic, Tomas Berdych, Stanislas Wawarinka, Janko Tipsarevic and Mardy Fish none of the above mentioned top seeds are safe as these players can rattle the best on their day.
Taking a look at the Women’s Singles draw, we have World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki as the top seed, Caroline will be looking to win her first Grand Slam ever to prove her supremacy over the rankings. Czech’s Petra Kvitova, the Wimbledon 2011 winner is the second seed for the tournament. Victoria Azarenka from Belarus is the third seed of the tournament and will also be looking to win her first singles tournament. Australia’s own Samantha Stousur will look to give her country the Women’s Championship after she defeated Serena Williams in 2011 US Open Finals, Sam who is the sixth seed looks in a good touch and will look to win this championship too. The 2008 winner and the No. 4 seed for the tournament, Russia’s Maria Sharapova will look to win her second title here as a lot of expectations rests on her shoulders. Women’s Singles draw has always been a mixed bag, full of turn-arounds and upsets.
With the line up set. We are all eagerly waiting for the Open to start and I’ll comeback tomorrow with what happened on the first day of the Australian Open. I am not going to make any predictions at least till we reach the Fourth round
. Let us just enjoy the game.
